Description

Colocasia (Elephant Ears)  ca-loh-KAH-see-uh

The Colocasia plant is native to tropical regions of Asia and the Americas. The large floppy leaves give the plants one of their common names, elephant ear. In the garden they are prized as ornamental plants, growing as a focal point in the back of a landscaping plan. Several varieties produce differing plant sizes, leaf shape color, ranging from bright green through reddish-tinged and black-outlined foliage. This plant gives a tropical look during the warm summer months at the edge of the understory of a tree or in a border. It can also be grown as a houseplant. Alternatively, it could be used as a potted plant outside during warmer months and brought indoors for cooler months.
