BASIC FUNCTION

The Section Grower is responsible for the crops in their assigned greenhouses or outdoor ranges. The Section Grower will monitor watering practices, chemical / fertilizer applications and keep an eye on quality issues with an emphasis on disease and pest control.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Section Grower reports to the Head Grower. Irrigators report to the Section Grower.

 

DUTIES:

Include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Accurately maintains paperwork on a daily basis. Ensures that crop logs are maintained and documented.
  2. Monitors irrigator’s productivity and continually trains them on proper watering techniques.
  3. Effectively communicates with the head Grower, crops and personnel issues.
  4. Monitors all plants in assigned ranges or greenhouses.
  5. Works effectively with other Section Growers and irrigators.
  6. Applies fungicide and fertilizers as needed or as directed by the Head Grower.
  7. Constantly monitors crops for pest and diseases issues. Communicates findings with the Head Grower.
  8. Keeps the areas that have been assigned clean of weeds and hazardous conditions.
  9. Consolidates and or spaces flats as needed or directed by the Head Grower.
  10. Understands the mechanized equipment in the area they have been assigned to and teaches proper watering techniques with said equipment.
  11. Communicates with the Head Grower any potential problems with climate control, crop issues, and personnel issues including scheduling conflicts.
  12. Will be expected to participate in growers meetings and growers crop walks as needed.
  13. Spray Crops when needed. PGR, Insecticide, Fungicide, Herbicide

 

MEASUREMENTS OF PERFORMANCE:

  1. Crop quality has met or exceeded reasonable sales expectations in both quality and size requirements.
  2. Irrigators are effective in watering practices and knows what is expected of them.
  3. Crops were highly maintained and losses were kept at a minimum.
  4. Work area was well maintained and there was an amiable work environment.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Education- High School diploma or equivalent GED

Minimum 2 years supervisory position in the greenhouse industry or direct working knowledge as an irrigator, fungicide / chemical applicator.

  4. Able to lift and carry 50#
  5. Able to push or pull lizzies as may be needed.
  6. Must pass cart training
  7. Must understand fertilizer and PGR ratios.
  8. Must be able to add and subtract.
  9. Must be able to understand instructions and directions in English
  10. Must be able to proficiently write notes and/or fill out reports in English
  11. Must be safety minded
  12. Literacy in Spanish is a plus

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a working greenhouse and conditions will be typical of the environment you will be asked to work in. You will be supervising irrigators which may be working indoors and outdoors. There may be times you are subjected to prolonged activities in inclement weather. Most greenhouse zones are climate controlled. You will be exposed to and handle plants that have been chemically treated. For Section Growers and Irrigators we work 7 days a week during peak season. Generally you may work 50 hours or more in any given work week. You may or may not receive Saturday or Sunday off as an off day, but will always have at minimum 1 off day per week. You may be asked to work into the evening based on need. You will be working around moving equipment. Smoking is prohibited in all greenhouse structures on this farm.

BASIC FUNCTION

To provide the basic day to day care needed to produce a quality crop including but not limited to, pest management, chemical and fertilizer applications, movement and watering. 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: 

The Assistant Grower/ Irrigator reports directly to the Section Grower. 

 

DUTIES: 

  1. Monitor the crops you are responsible for. 
  1. Apply fungicide and fertilizer as directed by the Section Grower 
  1. Effectively scout for pest infestation and or diseases. 
  1. Learn the names of plants, how to care for them and best growing applications. 
  1. Keep your work area clean and free of weeds and debris. 
  1. Consolidate flats/ blocks when needed or as directed by the Section Grower. 
  1. Learn to effectively use all equipment in your work area 
  1. Communicate potential problems with scheduling, facility equipment or work place hazards with the Section Grower.  

 

MEASUREMENTS OF PERFORMANCE: 

  1. Over all crop quality has met or exceeded reasonable sales expectations in both quality and size. 
  1. You have effectively watered and cared for bedding plants assigned to you. 
  1. Work area has been well maintained 
  1. You have made progress in learning about bedding plants and their growing applications.
  2. Ability to work well with others. 

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Must be able to speak and read English.  Some positions for non- English speaking employees under bilingual lead. 
  1. Walking 
  1. Standing 
  1. Able to lift and carry 50# 
  1. Able to push or pull loaded lizzies 
  1. Must be able to pass written test for electric cart safety 
  1. Must understand simple math equations in order to measure fertilizer rates and ratios 
  1. Must be able to write in English any crop plans notes 
  1. Must be safety minded

As a Young Plant Grower for Moss Greenhouses, you will be responsible for the following;

  • Lead a greenhouse team with clarity, direction, accountability, and oversee all stages of plant growth.
  • Maintain diligent daily records.
  • Scout for pests and disease
  • Apply chemical or fertilizer as needed.
  • Always have a clean greenhouse range
  • Stay up to date about pest management and best practices.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Horticulture, Agriculture or related field
  • 2 plus years’ experience in commercial plant cultivation in a greenhouse setting
  • Strong knowledge of plant species and pest control measures
  • Excellent Communication skills
  • Detailed oriented and able to make quick sound decisions.
  • Ability to be hands on
  • Desirable bilingual English/Spanish speaker

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely deliver bedding plants and hanging baskets to our greenhouse and supermarket partners within a 600-mile radius of Jerome, Idaho, focusing on the Boise to Idaho Falls markets.
  • Act as an ambassador for Moss Greenhouses, providing superior customer service and assistance in unloading delivery racks containing bedding plants, patio planters, and hanging baskets.
  • Operate trucks equipped with lift gates or tommy lifts; trucks will be pre-loaded for convenience.
  • Adhere to a given daily delivery route and ensure timely deliveries.
  • Utilize a smartphone for Electronic Logging Device (ELD) regulations compliance.
  • Participate in paid on-the-job training for seamless integration into the team.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a Class A CDL license with a clean driving record.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to assist in unloading heavy items and to effectively use delivery equipment.
  • Proficient in using smart devices for logistic and regulation purposes.
  • A willingness to undergo a Department of Motor Vehicle record check during the interview process.
  • Completion of a DOT drug screening.
