Description

Hemerocallis (Daylily)   hem-er-oh-KAL-iss

A Hemerocallis, commonly known as a daylily, is a low-maintenance and hardy perennial prized for its vibrant, beautiful flowers that are easy to grow in a variety of conditions. The name Hemerocallis comes from Greek words meaning “beautiful for a day,” which describes how each individual flower blooms for only one day. Although single blooms last only a day, each plant produces numerous flower stalks (scapes) with many buds that open in succession, providing a long blooming period of several weeks. Flowers come in various shapes and sizes, from classic trumpet and star shapes to more intricate spider and double forms with ruffled edges. They are not fussy about soil types and can grow in everything from clay to sandy soil, but they thrive best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil amended with organic matter.
