Description
Salpiglossis (Painted Tongue) sal-pih-GLOSS-iss
Salpiglossis, commonly known as painted tongue or trumpet flower, is an ornamental flowering plant known for its striking, trumpet-shaped blossoms with intricate, velvet-like veining. The flowers feature five lobes and come in a stunning variety of jewel-toned colors, such as purple, violet, blue, red, orange, yellow, and cream. They are often marbled or have contrasting, metallic-like veins that create a stained-glass effect. The lance-shaped leaves are typically green, sometimes with wavy edges. The plant has an upright, branching habit, reaching heights of 1 to 3 feet. Taller varieties may have somewhat weak stems and need staking. Salpiglossis thrives in cool-summer climates and will struggle in high heat and humidity. It needs full sun but benefits from some afternoon shade in hotter areas. The plant prefers rich, moist, and well-drained soil. The dazzling blooms make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers for bouquets.
